By the time I made this necklace I had already created numerous floral necklaces implementing the techniques of lost wax casting. Previously, I had used sheet wax, which is a soft and pliable wax that can be cut with an exacto knife and molded by hand, to mimic the delicate curves of flower petals. I set out a challenge for myself to achieve similar results working instead in metal. I began with a flat sheet of silver and sawed out the outline of the orchid. I then used pliers to bend the petals, giving the previously flat sheet of metal form and dimension. The end result is a shape that is both polished and refined, but still maintains an organic style.
